Love Games x Planned Parenthood

An art show where New Yorkers could fundraise to keep modern love alive.

Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) has long been the only affordable provider of healthcare services in New York City but in January 2017, it risked losing its funding.

The U.S. House of Representatives introduced H.R. 354, a bill that prohibited, for a one-year period, the availability of federal funds for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any of its affiliates or clinics, unless they would certify that the affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion during such period.

THE IDEA

I <3 New York is the official state slogan of New York but there is no modern love without reproductive health. Finding love in New York was already complicated without a law that restricted access to affordable reproductive health services like pregnancy tests, and screening for STIs and HIV. Spurred by a dating poll that named New York City “the most desperate city in the world,” we decided to organize an art show on Valentine’s Day to organize against the defunding of PPNYC. The show featured artists Claire Christerson, Jean-Sebastien Coles, Angelina Dreem, C. G. Esperanza, Orrin Hunter, Narayan Forest Lockett, Grace Miceli of ArtBabyGirl, Lissa Rivera, Matt Star,  Marie Tomanova, Jessica Yatrofsky.
